Coles County Animal Shelter is a small, non-profit, municipal run shelter and rabies control center. They pick up stray and injured animals and investigate cases of animal cruelty. The shelter houses animals who are waiting for their owners to claim them or who are waiting for new homes. They take in any pet that comes their way and never turn an animal way.
Unfortunately, due to limited space, they aren't a no-kill shelter, but they do their best to network with rescue groups to find homes for the pets in their care. Foster families also help by offering temporary housing.
To help combat overpopulation, Coles County Animal Shelter also offers a low-cost spay/neuter program for all pets.
The majority of dogs and cats land in shelters due to circumstances beyond their control. It’s certainly not their fault they're there. People often think shelter pets are inferior in some way, but they aren't bad dogs or cats. They’ve just had some bad luck that left them without a loving home.
Shelter pets aren't broken, they’ve just traveled a broken road that will lead them straight to you by following a few steps:
Adoption fees at Coles County Animal Shelter are as follows:
Your adoption fee for dogs covers parvo, distemper, and bordetella vaccinations, and heartworm testing, deworming, and microchipping. If they aren’t spayed or neutered, that's an additional $50 fee for males and $75 for females.
Your adoption fee for cats covers spay/neuter surgery, FVRCP vaccination, deworming, flea treatment, and microchipping.

In the meantime, here's some nice-to-know info that applies to nearly every animal shelter, humane society, and rescue.
Because shelter dogs are full of love!
Is it because they know you saved them and love you harder for it?
I can't say for certain, but yes.
Jokes aside, there are three things all shelter dogs need to thrive in their new home:
Older shelter dogs, generally 1+ years old, may have experienced a lot of trauma, which often results in one of 8 common behavioral issues:
These issues are correctable! Your dog isn't broken, they're just damaged. You can fix them with enough love, patience, and a good training plan.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, finding good dog trainers can be hard. Like everything else, dog training is moving only. but there are great online dog trainers that are proven to work and can help get your new pup on the right path.
You can learn a lot about an animal welfare organization just by looking at their name.
Adoption processes vary drastically from organization to organization, but here are some general tips that apply in most instances. Note that we'll use the term "shelters" here for simplicity but it includes all types of rescue organizations.
